Numerical Modelling
QinetiQ AeroStructures Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis capability includes a core of modellers and analysts, who are backed by the rest of the Company's engineers for surge capacity. The core group is highly experienced with doctorate, masters and bachelor trained engineers, some with international aviation backgrounds and others with rail and automotive industry experience. This group can address any client modelling requirement, from full aircraft loads models to complex geometry stress models.
CFD analysis is used to model airflows either internal (as through a duct) or external (as flow around an aircraft). This capability can be used for aerodynamic loads development, flow optimisation and heat transfer analysis problems, for both aviation and non-aviation industry work.
FEA types include linear, thermal, dynamic, rotor-dynamic and non-linear, including plastic, large displacement and contact analysis. We also have significant experience with strain surveys of aircraft and components and the subsequent model correlation activities.
